Multimodal network between Romania and Sweden
The global logistics provider Samskip and the Rail Cargo Group, the freight transport division of ÖBB, will start a joint connection between Curtici in Romania and the major logistics centres in Sweden in January 2017. The new service combines two existing routes and forms the first continuous route between Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.
Especially in Romania, rail freight transport has developed steadily in recent years, with investments such as a new international link to Bulgaria via the Danube as part of Pan-European Corridor IV and the restoration of the line between the seaport of Constanta and Bucharest. Curtici is the hub for hinterland transports to and from Central and Eastern Europe and is an important gateway for Western Europe.
With initially four planned round trips per week, customers will be offered an attractive alternative to road transport. The next step is to increase the number of round trips to five. The advantages for shippers: a seamless terminal-to-terminal service with a single contact that handles the entire transit via the Duisburg rail network. In addition, customers benefit from a user-friendly online portal for bookings and shipment monitoring of the entire network. The system also generates automatic departure and arrival times as well as arrival confirmations.
