Heating & steam boilers from Austria to China by train

The heating and ventilation manufacturer Hoval (Marchtrenk, Upper Austria) recently received an order to manufacture two steam boilers and four boilers for a hotel complex in Xi'an, China. Until now, transports have always been carried out by sea. A new transport concept for door-to-door delivery convinced the company to switch to environmentally friendly rail. The significantly shorter transport time and the high environmental compatibility were decisive factors in the decision to transport the special boilers by rail to China.

The logistical challenge started as early as the loading stage. The two steam boilers, each weighing 5.5 tons, and the four boilers, each weighing 11 tons, were loaded into special 40-foot high-cube containers for their more than 12,000-kilometre transport. Due to the container dimensions, there was only a few millimetres of space between the boilers and the walls and doors of the containers. By truck they first went to the container terminal in Munich, where the containers were finally reloaded onto freight wagons and started their journey via Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan to their destination terminal Chongqing in China. Once there, the six special boilers were transported to their destination by truck and delivered directly to the hotel complex in Xi'an, China, after almost 30 days.
